Body:

Sizing: Measure your bust and add 5 inches to that number.
Ex: If your bust is 30 the number you’d use would be 35 inches.
Now Ch in multiples of 12 + 2 until you’ve reached the number of inches
Ex: If you get to 108, which would be chaining 12 nine times and you’ve reached 35 inches then ch 2 more and you’re ready to start the body.

1) Sk 2 sts, Hdc in every st, turn
2) Ch 4, *Sk 2 sts, 3 Dc into the 3rd st* with 3 st remaining sk 2 st, Dc into last st, turn
3) Ch 5, *Sk 2 sts, Tc into 3rd st, ch 2* Sk last st, Tc into previous chain, turn
4) Ch 2, *Hdc into first st, 2 Hdc underneath your ch 2,* 2 Hdc into previous chain, turn
REP steps 2-4 until piece measures from your armpits to your waist or any desired length.

Arm hole:

Take your work and wrap it around your torso. Take your stitch markers and mark the spot right before your armpits, let’s call these marker A they mark your front panels. Put your work down and mark the three stitches in from where you placed marker A. These markers are for the back panel of your cardi, we’ll call them marker B. Now count your stitches that are in front of marker A and make sure they are the same amount from the edge to marker A.

Front Panels:

These are also your decreasing rows
Work your first row to marker A & back. You want to start from your edge going in.
1) Ch 4, *Sk 2 sts, 3 Dc into the 3rd st* with 3 st remaining sk 2 st, Dc into last st, turn
2) Ch 4, *sk 2 sts, Tc into 3rd st, ch 2* sk last st, TC into previous chain, turn
3) Ch 2, sk 1 st, *1 Hdc underneath your ch 2, 1 Hdc into previous Tc,* turn
4) Ch 4, *Sk 2 sts, 3 Dc into the 3rd st,* sk last st & Dc into previous chain, turn
5) Ch 5, *sk 2 sts, Tc into 3rd st, ch 2* sk last st, Tc into previous chain, turn
6) Ch 2, Sk 1 st, *1 Hdc underneath your ch 2, 1 Hdc into previous Tc,* 1 Hdc underneath previous ch, turn
Rep 1-6 until you have 8 Hdc sts left

Then continue normally until the front panel reaches the top of your shoulder:
1) Ch 4, *Sk 2 sts, 3 Dc into the 3rd st* with 3 st remaining sk 2 st, Dc into last st, turn
2) Ch 5, *sk 2 sts, Tc into 3rd st, ch 2* sk last st, Tc into previous chain, turn
3) Ch 2, *Hdc into first st, 2 Hdc into the space between each Tc* 2 Hdc into previous chain, turn
Rep these steps for both front panels. Leave a long tail in case you want to add more length later.

Back Panel:

You want to decrease until the back panel measures from pit to pit
1) Ch 4, *Sk 2 sts, 3 Dc into the 3rd st* with 3 st remaining sk 2 st, Dc into last st, turn
2) Ch 4, *Sk 2 sts, Tc into 3rd st, ch 2* Sk last st, Tc into previous chain, turn
3) Ch 2, Sk 1 st, *1 Hdc underneath your ch 2, 1 Hdc into previous Tc,* turn
Rep 1-3 until your piece measures from pit to pit across your chest continue normally:
1) Ch 4, *Sk 2 sts, 3 Dc into the 3rd st* with 3 st remaining sk 2 st, Dc into last st, turn
2) Ch 5, *Sk 2 sts, Tc into 3rd st, ch 2* Sk last st, TC into previous chain, turn
3) Ch 2, *Hdc into first st, 2 Hdc into the space between each Tc* 2 Hdc into previous chain, turn
Leave a long tail in case you want to add more length later.

Finishing:

I like to continue until I have at least a 1 inch in between my underarm & garment. When you have reached your desired length, turn your work inside out and sew up sleeves.

Optional: Use your H hook to Sc along sides of garment to anchor stitches.

  1. Just what I’m looking for….how many balls of Red heart did you use? I’m thinking about using cotton yarn…I may just do a swatch in cotton of the pattern and then measure out from there with the amount of stitches to make it fit around since cotton does not stretch.

    • Hey Camilbella!
Thank you for checking out this pattern. I used one jumbo ball of Red Heart Yarn. I link to color I used. You can also use cotton. I love the cotton yarn from Hobby Lobby “I love this cotton” It’s 100% cotton. You can swatch it first since you’ll be using different fibers. If you use a cotton blend it will have a bit more of a stretch. Please let me know if you have any more questions!
